Rams vs. Chiefs: Running Blog

Fourth Quarter

- The Rams got the ball right back to open the quarter as Justin Cole sacked Stanzi on fourth down and Rocky McIntosh recovered.

- The offense quickly marched down the field and rookie RB Daryl Richardson punched it in from 4 yards out to make it 31-10.

- The Rams got it back and took over near midfield with Tom Brandstater taking over at QB.

- K Garrett Lindholm got his first opportunity and just missed from 51 yards out.

- Brady Quinn hit Jeremy Horne for a 38-yard touchdown to trim the margin to 31-17 with 3:51 to play.

- That did it for the scoring as the Rams win this one 31-17 and even their preseason record at 1-1.

Third Quarter

- The Rams got off to a rousing start in the second half as a pass from Ricky Stanzi was deflected by rookie CB Trumaine Johnson into the waiting arms of rookie DT Matt Conrath for an interceptions.

- The second team offense took over at the Chiefs 18.

- On fourth down, Fisher went for it again as Clemens hit WR Brian Quick for an apparent 10-yard touchdown on fourth-and-2.

- But Quick was ruled down short of the goal on review.

- Pead took care of the rest, leaping over the defense for a 1-yard score to make it 24-10 Rams with less than 12 minutes to go in the third quarter.

- The Chiefs responded with a strong drive into Rams territory but a sack by rookie DE Scott Smith set the Chiefs up for third-and-11 at the Rams’ 35.

- Stanzi picked up 11 on third down to set up a fourth-and-1.

- Linebacker Justin Cole brought down Stanzi for a sack on fourth down, knocking the ball loose. It was recovered by LB Rocky McIntosh to give it back to the Rams.

- Austin Davis hit Pettis for a gain of 22 on first down into Kansas City territory.

- At the end of the third quarter, the Rams lead 24-10 andhave the ball at Kansas City’s 41 for second-and-16.

Second Quarter

- The Chiefs continued to move methodically with some big gainers for Dexter McCluster and Baldwin before Peyton Hillis punched it in from 1 yard out to cut it to 14-7 Rams.

- The Rams ended the night for the starters on the first possession of the second quarter as Kellen Clemens relieved Bradford.

- Bradford finished his night six-of-nine for 102 yards and two touchdowns for a rating of 144.4.

- Jackson was also very effective, rushing seven times for 49 yards.

- Clemens and Co. went three and out.

- The Rams have their second team defense in now against KC’s top offense.

- The defense did its job, buoyed by the efforts of DE Eugene Sims, who busted through to drop Hillis for a 1-yard gain on first down then drew a holding and facemask penalty to kill the drive.

- The Rams got it back and Clemens kept the drive alive with a third down scramble.

- Clemens found Givens for another big gain to Kansas City’s 40.

- The Rams couldn’t get much further and settled for a 52-yard field goal from rookie K Greg Zuerlein. Of course, Young G.Z. knocked it through with room to spare, call it a chip shot. Rams lead 17-7 with 1:10 to go in the half.

- The Chiefs responded with a 44-yard field goal from Ryan Succop to make it 17-10 Rams heading into the locker room.

First Quarter

- The Rams won the toss and received, as the opening kick went for a touchback to get the offense started at the 20.

- QB Sam Bradford wasted no time coming out and making a statement.

- On the first play, Bradford hit WR Danny Amendola for a gain of 35 yards down the right sideline.

- RB Steven Jackson rushed twice for 22 yards to Kansas City’s 23.

- On first down there, Bradford fired over the middle to TE Lance Kendricks who hauled it in and dragged a tackler with him into the end zone for a touchdown and a 7-0 lead.

- The four-play drive lasted 1:58.

- The defense quickly got the ball back as CB Janoris Jenkins forced a fumble by WR Jon Baldwin that was recovered by S Craig Cahl at Kansas City’s 31.

- The Rams quickly moved 15 yards as Bradford and Amendola hooked up again to the Chiefs 16.

- Jackson picked up 3 yards on first down but the Rams were pushed back by a false start on LT Rodger Saffold.

- An incompletion to WR Austin Pettis set up third and 12 and Bradford hit Steve Smith for 10 yards.

- Coach Jeff Fisher didn’t hesitate to go for it, allowing Bradford to find Amendola for 8 yards and a touchdown to make it 14-0 just five minutes into the game.

- The defense got it back with a stop as LB Jo-Lonn Dunbar made a nice tackle in space on third-and-3 for a loss of 2.

- The Rams moved it again, getting to their 45 behind a 14-yard run from Jackson, an 11-yard strike to Kendricks and 9 more yards for Jackson.

- Jackson was stuffed on third-and-1, though and the Rams booted it back.

- Kansas City took over at its 20. The Chiefs got to their 48 on an 11-yard completion to Baldwin to end the quarter.

Pregame Notes

- Greetings from the Edward Jones Dome where the Rams and Chiefs are preparing to kickoff the second preseason contest for each squad in this exhibition season.

- The Rams are expected to play their starters a bit longer than they did in the first game. The first team offense will likely play into the second quarter, if not the whole first half, same for the defense.

- Expect RB Steven Jackson to take less work than that, probably closer to two series, depending on how those first two possessions go.

- Here’s the official scratch list:

Rams: WR Brandon Gibson, WR Charles Gilbert, WR Brandyn Harvey, S Darian Stewart, CB Bradley Fletcher, C Scott Wells, DE Jamaar Jarrett, WR Danario Alexander and DT Trevor Laws.

Chiefs: CB Brandon Flowers, RB  Cyrus Gray, DB De’Quan Menzie, LB Cameron Sheffield, DL Ethan Johnson and WR Dwayne Bowe.

- Gov. Jay Nixon will, of course, be in the house tonight to present the Governor’s Cup to the winner. The Rams won it last year with a 14-10 victory.

- Stay tuned through the evening for updates.
